Cyclocross 10/24/10 K Bauman on the Podium again...

It was a rainy, wet, muddy day out at PIR on Sunday but we persevered and stayed through the torrential down pours to watch Kat make another strong showing. With a couple falls on the back of the course she looked muddied and damp, but we all knew that was just her hard core determination shining through the weather. Soupy mud made for fun spills and difficult run-ups but it was all in all a great day. A second third place finish for Ms. Bauman (and third top five) in the beginners category means that it might be time for her to step it up and stomp it down in the Bs.

Coming to Portland

Informational Post / place to list rides that are going to happen while I am in Portland for Sarah's wedding the weekend of August 21st.

We are staying out in Hillsboro a couple days, so there are a couple rides that shall be out in farm land. They both start at the end of the MAX line (aka Fred Nachtigal's office parking lot). All rides may include some gravel, so get your dirt legs ready.

Friday ride around Laurel. Longish, and should include a decent climb and fast descent. Lots of time to fool around, and then find beer afterward. Really beautiful farm country.

Saturday lunch / beer ride to Helvatia (or Rock Creek) tavern. Not too long, we need to be back to Hillsboro and cleaned up fairly early. A bit of a climb, and a genuinely fun descent in this one.

Sunday ride in Portland through Forest park. Should be fun, hopefully not too much mud, CX bikes might be good, but I'm doing it on my roadbike - so take it as you will. We will eat food and drink beer half way through, and it will be awesome.

If any one wants to go on a fast(ish) road ride on Monday let me know! I'd love to go hit the dirt in Tabor, and then do some climbing and get some fast miles in.

All are welcome, and we won't drop any one - unless you deserve it.

Racing for New Orleans!

Admittedly this is not a photo-post. But that image you see to the left is a typical sight on my desk (although that is a little cleaner than it is right now).

This is a post about the fact that I am competing in the Ocshner half iron man triathlon in New Orleans in April. No I'm not running or swimming - aching knees and getting kicked in the face under water aren't exactly my cup-of tea. I am doing the 56 mile bike leg of the race. And no, I'm not doing it just to prove that I can ride my bike in a state I've never been to before. I'm doing it as a fundraiser for a great non-profit retreat center in downtown New Orleans who gives short and long term residence to volunteers who come to help rebuild the city - Contemplatives in Action.

If you are here you probably got directed here from an email, or facebook. If you would like to donate simply click here and you'll be redirected to a paypal donate page, just note my name in the payment and we'll be golden! I am asking for 50 cents per mile, the bike leg is 56 miles - that is only $28, but it will be well used.

And of course, regardless of donations I really appreciate the support that everyone has given me over the last year of moving around, starting school, changing my life and all - so thanks!

Bike trip to Montara

My friend Kat and I took a little trek down the coast this past week and explored the hills around Montara - a little seaside town above the Pacific ocean. We stayed at a hostel that was on the grounds of the old Montara light-house. Simply lovely weather, and fantastic views of the ocean crashing against the rocks below.

I'm still in awe of the fact that it is January and a totally appropriate time for a little bike tour - who would have thought that California was such a magical place.

CDSP Prom 2009

Yep, we, the fine folks at CDSP threw a little fall prom-bash last night. The old refectory got transformed into an enchanting atmosphere of under-the-sea bliss. One and all were transported back to their salad days, and let those tender feelings resurface as the music played into the night.

My first three days in Berkeley

I arrived in Berkeley, well actually Emeryville, via the Coast Starlight at about eight fifteen in the morning on Friday August 28th. In short order I collected my bike, broken down and in a box, along with my back pack from the baggage porter and began the process of assembling my bike in order to transport myself, and all my stuff up to the school. By about nine AM I had the bike fully assembled, and ready to roll.

After I arrived at the school I had a mellow day of meeting people, doing stuff, and heading off to bed early.
Saturday I trekked into the city to meet up with my darling Lizzy Strong, and Monica Storss (one of the bay's best poetess'). We had a lovely lunch at Elizabeth's restaurant. Then Monica and I went and hung out in Delores Park - she smoked a cigarette, I drank a beer. It was simply beautiful weather, great to sit down in the grass, and play with the dogs that walked by.

Sunday (today) I went to church, and then after a bit of food took to the bike. Upon not much consideration Tilden Park was decided as the destination of our bi-pedal adventure. It was an amazing ride, 1300 feet of climbing and descending - plus a bit more in the middle when I got a little lost and went down and back up. On the descent back down to campus I had a truly 'dream-come-true' moment. I rolled down the hill past the Cyclotron, Lawrence Livermore, and into the backside of the UC Berkeley campus. Needless to say, I was/am a very happy man this afternoon.

A little trip to the north...

I am in the midst of transitioning to graduate school. In the last two weeks I have moved out of my apartment, gotten rid of about ninety percent of my stuff, moved what I do still own into my friends garage, taken the GRE exam, quit my job of nearly three years, and turned twenty-seven. After all that excitement a long weekend of camping and riding bikes was very much in order.

Friday morning my friend Christine and I took to the road, bikes perched atop the car, and the trunk full of food and camping gear. Our destination, Vancouver Island, with a stop off on Bainbridge Island on the way home to visit my grandfather. I got to try out the new rack on my bike, and use my new panniers for the first time - a wonderful experience all around.

It ended up being quite a bit of driving, but Christine was nice enough to take care of that aspect - props to you for that Christine. Perhaps you should look into long haul trucking? In spite of all the time in the car we got to see some quite beautiful vistas, eat good food while sitting on a beach after taking a dip in a mountain lake, and ride bikes through some wide-empty logging roads. The only two major hiccups were being searched by Canadian customs on the way in, and then walking around Victoria for five hours while we waited to get on the ferry to come back to Port Angeles.

All in all a splendid weekend, and I feel like I have a couple good photos to show for it - there are in fact more photos to come, but I seem to have misplaced the point nd shoot camera.

Hot New Ride...

Yep, that MAP porteur bike I rode a couple weeks ago...It is now mine.

I told a friend of mine that it is nicer than any car I've ever owned, and prettier than most of the girls I've dated - which doesn't diminish the quality of either of those things, but this bike is really just that nice. It is my new hauler, get me from here to there, along with all my stuff ride. I am car-less these days, and this is going to be a far superior substitute for me and my lifestyle.

Still to come a nice front porteur rack, with accommodations for panniers...This thing is going to be a hauling rig!

Rack Attack hosted a little shindig the other night, cheap booze, music, pizza and donuts. All in all a good combination. Hopefully next year we'll have an even better turnout. After we put the shop back together we went downstairs for some late night cruiser-bike racing action.

You can ask my parents, I was a tinkerer as a child. I took apart any thing that I could get my hands on. At first it was toys, pens, more toys. But as I got older I got into more intricate things, I started using screw drivers, and soldering irons and took apart cars and computers. If it is something that I could open up and fix you better believe I've tried. So I hadn't taken any thing apart for fun in quite a while, so when Art and I went up snow shoeing last week I picked up a disposable camera thinking it would be an interesting project to reload with some b/w film. Well it was sadly much easier than I imagined, but the results were pretty cool, and what is amazing is that it isn't disposable, hell it takes 35mm cartridges...

I went snow shoeing with a few peeps and it was a total blast. It was one of those rare days on the mountain where it was sunny, clear skies and just amazing light. Thank you Mt. Hood for being so obliging with my photos. I have some black and whites to develop too, but I haven't gotten a chance to yet.

New Years Day and Tamales

Well, none of us had any interest in watching fools-ball on new years day, so we had a little party and made tamales. It was awesome, we ended up with some 80 tamales or so. Between the five of us we ate over twenty that day too. It was a blast, and will hopefully become a new years tradition.

I do have to say that there was one more person at the party, but she was taking the photos and so there aren't any of her here - Amanda Ball did an excellent job of snapping most of these and I'm glad we had her company. Yeah, she is pretty excellent.

Snow Day, and my new blingy D200

It snowed in Portland! And not only did it snow, but it actually snowed all day and then the snow did a really crazy thing - it stuck around. I snapped a few photos with my new D200 just to give it a bit of a try out on Sunday. Then I decided to walk to work this morning and snapped a few more in the beautiful morning sunlight. I have to admit, having a great camera, and a beautiful morning makes it so easy to get good photos.

I drove up to Everett last weekend to see the the USS Abraham Lincoln arrive back into port. My brother Jason had been out to sea for only three of the seven months the ship was away, but I could tell he was still very ready to get off the floating city. I'll admit it was pretty interesting, lots of flags and about a thousand people. I had thought about wearing an Obama t-shirt but then figured it might not be the best idea.

New tattoo

Well I was kind of itching to get a new tattoo...And here it is. The design is a collaboration between Mr. Art Almaguer and I, kind of a play on the "Free Cascadia" design. I love it, and am pretty excited about it. Although at the moment it is still a bit painful, and I am sure it will get all kinds of itchy in the next week or so I am still stoked.
